Greg Norman is giddy at the thought of an LIV Golf member winning the Masters. After Augusta National refused to ban the rebel tour's golfers from the event (should they qualify), the possibility is certainly there.
They face steep competition from Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and others, but they at least have a chance of winning golf's most prestigious event.
Norman said via Sky Sports:
"If one of the guys [wins], no matter who it is, they are all going to be there on the 18th green, they are all going to be there, and that just gives me goosebumps to think about."
Currently, Phil Mickelson, Charl Schwartzel, Bubba Watson, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith, Mito Peirera, Joaquin Niemann, Abe Ancer, Thomas Pieters, Harold Varner III, Jason Kokrak, Kevin Na, and Louis Oosthuizen are in the Masters field.
Greg Norman continued:
"When you walk up 18, your caddy hugs you, then you see your wife or your mum and dad. Now to have those 17 other guys there, that's the spirit we want. That's what these guys talk about. They are saying no matter who wins, no matter who is in that position, we are going to be there."
He finished by saying:
"I compliment the Masters on letting the players play because now they have got the best field and they are actually now the true Super Bowl. If I'm the Masters right now, I would want, on Sunday, DJ or Brooks or Cam, any of the guys against Rory (McIlroy) and Jon Rahm. Can you imagine what the TV ratings would be like?"
To his credit, a PGA vs. LIV Golf finale on Sunday would make for excellent television. The Masters is always a must-watch event, but with the divide in golf playing a big role on the final day, everyone will be watching.
Greg Norman not invited to 2023 Masters
Greg Norman, a two-time major winner, was not invited to the 2023 Masters. He said via Daily Mail:
"Funnily enough, I haven't been invited. As a major winner I always was before, but they only sent me a grounds pass last year and nothing, zilch, this time around. I'm disappointed because it's so petty but of course I'll still be watching."
Norman also added:
"You could say I came within touching distance on a few occasions and I suppose it stands out as the big absence on my CV. That's part of why it would mean so much to see one of our LIV family in the Butler Cabin. I would be the happiest man in the world, the first to ring and congratulate and pay for what would be an incredible party.
"But it's not about me it's about the players and I'm telling you they're not going there as individuals, but as a team, backing each other, supporting and rooting for each other. I think that gives these great players an even greater chance next Sunday."
Greg Norman is not too worried about the lack of an invite, though, as he's more concerned with watching one of his defectors come through for a Masters victory.
