Thriston Lawrence's girlfriend has shared a sad story after the golfer lost the BMW PGA Championship in the playoffs against Rory Mcllroy and Billy Horschel. The DP World Tour event concluded on Sunday, September 22, at the Wentworth Golf Club in Virginia Water, United Kingdom.
After four rounds, Thriston Lawrence tied for the first position with Mcllroy and Horschel with an aggregate score of -20. He scored 68, 70, 65, and 65 in the four rounds at Wentworth. In the first extra hole, Lawrence was eliminated after he scored a bogey and both Mcllroy and Horschel notched a birdie. Horschel won the tournament with an eagle on the second extra hole.
Talking about it, Lawrence's girlfriend said that she was a bit teary on the stands on the 18th hole. She elaborated (via DP World Tour):
"I have to share this, I woke up, I think it was Tuesday morning and the first thing I said to him (Lawrence) was, I literally just had a dream where you and Billy tee off final group this week, the dream ended with him with a two-foot putt for the win." (0:48-0:52)
The South African's girlfriend said that even though they had dreamt of him winning, she was proud of his achievement. She expressed pride in seeing him prove he was more than good enough to compete at this level.
Talking about his own performance at the BMW PGA Championship, Thriston Lawrence said in the above video:
"overall game was really good and you know, I came in with some nice form and yeah, I managed to get in a playoff, so very pleased with that, if you would have told me you know, round one, I would have been in a playoff, I would have taken it, so yeah, very happy with the week."
It was Thriston Lawrence's 100th start on the DP World Tour. In the last five starts, he has had two top-3 finishes and four top-30 finishes. In 2022, he finished 14th in the Race to Dubai rankings while he finished 19th last year. He had two wins last year.
"I think just the last two years has proven that I can win anywhere in the world, so being in a nice company like Rory and Billy obviously makes you a bit more confident and yeah, let's see what happens in the next few events," he added.
