Tyrrell Hatton opened up about the difficulties he faced while playing at the 2024 DP World Tour Championship. The English golfer started at the European Tour event with an impressive round of 67 and took the lead in the game.
However, he faced some challenges while playing at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. During a press conference for the tournament on November 14, Hatton reflected on the difficulties he encountered. He said (via ASAP Sports):
"There's probably a few things. I don't know how the weather has been over here but the greens are definitely slower than they have been in the past. Because they are slower, the grain probably takes the ball a little bit more so they don't roll maybe as good as they have done previously and the fairways are a little bit weird, as well. I know the rough such, which if you do miss the fairways, it's hard."
The English golfer further elaborated on his game on the fairways, saying:
"But the fairways are quite awkward to play off, even on the last, I hit a nice wedge shot and I got a flyer off the fairway. You're not really playing for that. So I think you need a little bit of luck in terms of how we expect our distances to be, and I guess it's not quite coming off as we think."
The 2024 DP World Tour Championship is the season-concluding event of the European circuit. It started with its first round on Thursday, November 14, and on day one, Tyrrell Hatton and Rory McIlroy dominated on the greens. Both golfers shot 5-under 67 and tied for the lead.
Paul Waring, coming off his victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship last week, also played a phenomenal round and shot 4-under 68 to settle in third place. Adam Scott shot 3-under 69 and tied for fourth place with Keita Nakajima, Alex Fitzpatrick, Matt Wallace, Rikuya Hoshino, Billy Horschel, and Niklas Nørgaard.
A look into Tyrrell Hatton’s performance at the 2024 DP World Tour Championship
The English golfer started his game on the first hole and shot a birdie on it. He carded three birdies and a bogey on the front nine and four birdies and a bogey on the back nine for a round of 5-under 67.
In the press conference for the tournament, he also opened up about his score and said (via ASAP Sports):
"To be honest I feel like the score was better than it felt. I felt I was tinkering over most tee shots and at times, I felt like my misses were bigger than perhaps they have been over the last month or so, month and a half. But at the end of the day, to shoot 5-under, you have to, I guess, play fairly solid golf. And in my head, I don't really know what that is. But here we are."
Notably, the 2024 DP World Tour Championship is a four-day event and will conclude on Sunday, November 17.
