The Players Championship, which is underway at the TPC Sawgrass from March 9 to March 12 was suspended after the second round due to bad weather. The event was cut short by inclement weather after only a few golfers started their game.
PGA Tour officials announced that it will take a few hours to start the game again.
The Players Championship is scheduled to wrap up with a finale on Sunday, which now seems to be in doubt. It will take at least three hours to resume the second round, which will push the third round to only be finished on Sunday, with the last round likely to be completed on Monday.
The weather forecast claimed there would be a small chance of rain on Saturday and the temperature for the day would be low-70s and would be around 80 on Sunday.
Bad weather has increased the tensions on the course as golfers were already struggling to cut the tournament. Some of the best-ranked golfers are in jeopardy of missing the projected cut of 2 over after their performance in the first round.
The list includes world No.3, Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Tony Finau, Matt Fitzpatrick, Kurt Kitayama, and Tom Kim.
The Players Championship second-round updates
The Players Championship will resume with the second round at 7 AM on Saturday, March 11. The tournament officials announced on their official Twitter account, claiming the gates will open at 6:45 am.
After a semi-finish second round, Christiaan Benzuinhout took a surprise lead by scoring a deficit of eight alongside Adam Svensson.
Collin Morikawa, who was in second position after the first round, has now settled into a three-way tie for third position alongside Ben Griffin and Min Woo Lee.
2022 Masters winner Scottie Scheffler settled for the sixth position with Taylor Pendrith with a score under five.
Open-round leader Chad Ramey settled for the eighth position along with Will Gordon, Jason Day, Viktor Hovland, Denny McCarthy, Adam Hadwin, and Byeong Hun An.
Justin Suh has secured 15th position alongside Danny Willett, Cam Davis, David Lingmerth, and Brandon Wu.
Gary Woodland, Sam Burns, Wyndham Clark, Dylan Wu, Aaron Rai, Brendon Todd, Si Woo Kim, Tyrell Hatton, Rickie Fowler, Tyler Duncan, Ryan Fox, and Nate Lashley share the 20th position after the unfinished second round of the Players Championship.
Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm were met with unfortunate fates after the second round of the tournament. McIlroy was on edge to miss the cut while Rahm, who won three PGA Tour events this year, withdrew from the tournament ahead of the second round due to illness.
The Players Championship field is surprisingly dominated by rising stars and low-ranked golfers. Chad Ramey’s opening-round lead has won just one PGA Tour event in his career and is looking for his second win in the tournament.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout, on the other hand, is yet to win the PGA Tour. He has won three European tours and four Sunshine Tours but is yet to register a victory on the PGA Tour.
