Tiger Woods finally made his debut at the TGL series with the first match of the Jupiter Links Golf Club on January 14. In the tech-infused series, the American golfer had some mishits.
During the match, Woods missed a 100-yard shot by just 40 yards. His mishit led his son Charlie to burst into laughter. PGA/LIV Hot Takes shared a video of Woods' unfortunate shot on its X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:
"No way Tiger missed this 100 yard shot by 40 yards…"
However, fans in the comment section called it foul play and said that simulators lie at times.
"The Bookies definitely cooked it," a fan wrote.
Some fans were critical of the series and took a jibe at the monitor used for Woods' brand.
"Well it’s his own launch monitor brand he has a stake in and his own league he helped put together lol. So whether he did or did not miss this shot, the outcome is still heavily on him," another fan jotted.
"he only has his own sim to blame, there is reason why every tour player not invested in foresight uses trackman," one more fan added.
Others were critical of the simulator.
"I’d bet the simulator miscalculated the spin to be far less than it actually was so he got a fake flier, happens quite often on LM," a fan commented.
"Simulator must’ve been off since it’s like not real golf," another fan added.
Tiger Woods debuts with a loss at TGL
Woods' team, Jupiter Links Golf Club, struggled in their match at the TGL on Tuesday, January 14. The series matches take place in a 15-hole format, and Jupiter could only win one hole. It was Los Angeles Golf Club that finally registered the win by 12-1.
The match has two formats: the first nine holes are in triples format, while the remaining six are in singles format. Los Angeles won eight holes in the triples format, while Jupiter won one. However, in singles, Jupiter struggled and did not win any, while Los Angeles won four holes.
Tiger Woods opened up about the match after their loss, saying (via CNN):
"We were entertaining. We hit a lot of shots. I think the people there got to see how bad pros can be. It was just a boat race, oh my goodness. But we had a great time.”
However, the Jupiter Links Golf Club and Los Angeles Golf Club match drew significant views on ESPN. The match drew one million views, which was a nine percent increase from the first TGL match.
The next TGL match will be between New York Golf Club and Atlanta Drive Golf Club on Tuesday, January 21.
