“They’re not for everybody” - Phil Mickelson reveals why he wears sunglasses while playing in the rain

Phil Mickelson was wearing sunglasses during the rain on the third day of the 2023 PGA Championship, and he had a good reason for the unusual fashion choice.

Kyle Porter of CBS tweeted that the glasses looked photoshopped.

Mickelson responded to Porter's suggestion:

"They are light enhancement glasses that are made for overcast and rainy days. They add light, helps to read greens, and protects from wind and rain drops. They’re not for everybody. In fact, not many people even know of them 🤷‍♂️"

The former World No. 2 was using the Uswing GF002 model this week at Oak Hill. Last month during the Masters, he was seen donning a BD005 model.

Mickelson started wearing shades in 2020 and explained the reason for doing so.

"Back during Covid break, I did this Carac cream, which is like a skin cancer chemotherapy treatment on your face for like two weeks," he was quoted as saying as per Golf.com in 2020.

"Your skin blotches up and you kill these cancer cells that you can’t see, and when I went outside, I had to wear some protection, so I wore these glasses to kind of protect the area around my eyes," he added.

Mickelson stated that he liked the sunglasses since his eyes were more relaxed and he didn't have to squint the whole time.

"I went out and played with them, and I thought, ‘Oh, I’ll give it a try’," he said. "So that’s kind of where it started. And then my eyes were much more relaxed at the end of the day, they weren’t squinting the whole time."

Phil Mickelson returned to the 2023 PGA Championship after giving it a skip last year. However, it hasn't been a great outing for him so far as he has struggled to find his form over the last three days.

The two-time PGA Championship winner is at T67 after posting 73, 72 and 75 over in three rounds at Oak Hill and trails the 54-holes leader Brooks Koepka by 16 strokes.

The six-time major winner will tee off at 8:20 am on Sunday alongside defending champion Justin Thomas, who has had a tough time at Oak Hill as well. Thomas carded 75 on Saturday, closing his three-day total at 10-over.

The past two PGA Championship winners will look to regain some form on the final day after a disappointing week so far.

Brooks Koepka is once again shining at the majors this season and holds the 54-hole lead for the second straight major this year. After missing his chances at the 2023 Masters, Koepka will look to learn from his errors this time.

It could be anybody's game on the final day at Oak Hill as the difference at the top is slim. Corey Conners and Viktor Hovland are one stroke short of the lead, followed by Bryson DeChambeau at 3-under.
