Rory McIlroy has deep thoughts on the future of golf. The Northern Irish golfer has been constantly talking to PGA Tour officials to make changes to the event since the LIV Golf came into existence.
He is up against the newly formed series. Meanwhile, the PGA Tour is trying its best to compete with LIV Golf and has made countless changes to its schedule and even increased the purse of events, ensuring better prize money for the players.
McIlroy is competing at the ongoing 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational and posted a round of 69 on Friday that left him jumping from 66th position to 20th.
The former world No.1 confessed that he was exhausted and needed a hard reset at the end of 2022, before starting the calendar year 2023.
Speaking about his performance, McIlroy said:
"There's been a ton of phone calls, a ton of meetings, but now that it's been decided and announced, hopefully, it will quiet down on that front a bit for me."
He went ahead and explained the changes made on the tours and their benefits to the top players.
"Look, I think everyone knows (the PGA Tour) is the place that you want to play golf, right? It is. People complain about these 10 cards going to the European Tour players that get on this tour, but if I'm a European Tour player, like, that's brilliant. Instead of trying to think about what’s good for the [DP World Tour], think about what’s good for the players that are on that tour. I think that’s where people need to sort of reframe their mind a little bit.”
Rory McIlroy opens up about the designated events
The PGA Tour has announced eight designated events for the year 2024. The new events are specially meant for top players. Rory McIlroy also opened up about the designated events at the press conference of the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational Open. He said:
"So to have the opportunity to be in the top 10 in Europe and then get over where all the opportunity is, which is here, I’m not saying there’s no opportunity over there, there is. But the one thing I would like to see going forward with this designated events schedule is trying to get some of those tournaments in the mix overseas."
Rory McIlroy explained that the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour are trying to combine a little bit for better opportunities. He added:
"Irish Open. Spanish Open. Scottish Open is obviously a co-sanctioned event now, which is a big step forward. Wentworth. There’s a few obvious ones that stick out that you could try to incorporate into more of a World Tour schedule, more so than it just being purely DP World, purely PGA Tour, and trying to sort of combine the two a little bit.”
The designated event announced by the PGA Tour will have a small field of 70-80 golfers with better prize money. It is important to note that several reports claimed the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am event will also be a part of the designated event from next year.
