Brandel Chamblee once again mocked LIV Golf for the low ratings and stated that the circuit lacked innovation in its ideas. He also said that the PGA Tour was still about 'charity and merit' which couldn't be said about the Saudi-backed circuit.
As per a recent report, LIV Golf's Chicago event garnered 89,000 viewers on the final round on Sunday, September 15. This was less than the second round, which had a viewership of 134K.
On Tuesday, September 17, Brandel Chamblee shared his views on the LIV Golf's low viewership. When one fan countered him, stating that the PGA Tour was unable to get 300K views on TV, Chamblee had a big justification.
"It depends on the event, and to be sure viewership is down, but overall the image of the PGA Tour is still about charity and merit. Which is why it still remains such a strong commercial property. Innovation is no doubt coming, but the PGA Tour with its partners still gives hundreds of millions to charity and has the most sought after demographic in all of sport. None of which can be said about LIV," he wrote.
Fans online had mixed reactions to Chamblee's comment, and many called it propaganda. Here's a look at some reactions:
"This reads like a propaganda," one fan wrote.
"LIV to Give has already pledged $100 million," another fan pointed out.
"Charity? Cmon Brandel, you’re better than that… no one believes that. Merit, 100% agree. This is all about power and money, it’s that simple," this user commented.
"It's this head in the sand attitude which is killing the PGA tour. The money is unsustainable, sponsors are bailing and the majority of the courses are bland , easy tracks," another fan opined.
"Charity plus the purse money are going to cause sponsors to back off. When PGA/LIV compromise and Saudi money is a major factor it's over," one fan posted.
"I'm just not sure the average viewer cares about how much some corporation is giving to charity," this fan wrote.
PGA Tour's Procore Championship receives less viewership than LIV Golf Chicago
While LIV Golf's Chicago event received 89,000 viewers on Sunday, the PGA Tour's Procore Championship only garnered 69,000 viewers for its final round.
Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal reported that the Procore Championship saw a significant drop in viewership. Last year, the tournament attracted 298,000 viewers for the final round.
However, the Procore Championship was also affected by several other events over the weekend. The Solheim Cup's final round took place on Sunday as well, drawing 657,000 viewers on NBC.
The Procore Championship was the first event of the FedEx Cup Fall season, which will be followed by the Sanderson Farms Championship in the first week of October. Before that, several PGA Tour pros will be in action at the Presidents Cup next week.
