Dermot Desmond, who teamed up with Thorbjorn Olesen at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, opened up about gaining 'bragging rights' after finishing ahead of his sons on the leaderboard at the tournament. The recently concluded DP World Tour event featured a stellar field in which professionals were joined by amateur players. There was also a separate competition for the professionals.
In the team event, Olesen and Irish businessman and fundraiser Dermot Desmond, who has a net worth of $2.2 billion according to Forbes, played together and won the tournament. Interestingly, three of Desmond's sons also competed in the tournament, but they struggled with their game and finished outside the top 20.
Meanwhile, Dermot Desmond won the tournament for the second time, earning "bragging rights" for himself within the family. During the press conference, a reporter questioned him about this, and in response, the Celtics Football Club's majority shareholder said (via ASAP Sports):
"They are much better golfers than I am. At my age now, I'm a realist. I know what I can do, and I know what I can't do. There's a lot of things I can't do that they can do."
At the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Desmond's son Dery teamed up with Simon Forström, finishing in a tie for 25th place. Notably, the tournament had a cut line after 54 holes, and only the top 20 teams on the leaderboard after Saturday's round on October 5 qualified to compete in the finale on Sunday, October 6.
Dery and Forström played only three rounds and settled in 25th place at 27-under. Robert Desmond played in a team with Ivan Cantero, but they also had a rough outing, finishing in a tie for 60th place after three rounds. Brett Desmond finished in 127th place while playing with Sebb Garcia.
"Dermot was very consistent"- Thorbjorn Olesen on his partner's game at the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship
In the post-round press conference, Thorbjorn Olesen spoke about playing with Dermot Desmond at the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The Danish golfer praised the Irish businessman for his game and said (via ASAP Sports):
"Not just today, I think. The first three days was amazing. Dermot was very consistent. Played great all week, and you know, when he wasn't playing, I stepped in a few times. But yeah, we had a great time, all four days, and this is a very special tournament, it's special for me, and yeah, it's been a lot of fun," Olesen said.
Olesen and Desmond played some impressive golf at the tournament. They started off their outing with a round of 60 and then shot 63 in the second round. They maintained their good form and carded a round of 58 on the third day, finishing with a final round of 59. Overall, they finished with a score of 13-under and won the tournament.
