Justin Thomas recently made a hilarious request during his mid-round 'walk-and-talk' interview at the Sentry 2025. The first round concluded on Thursday, January 2, at Plantation Course at Kapalua Golf Club in Kapalua, Hawaii.

During his interview with Golf.com journalist, Thomas emphasized that the next walk-and-talk interview be conducted on a downhill hole rather than an uphill one. During the interview, he said:

"By the way, can we do this on a downhill hole next time?"

The journalist remarked that he had made the same request to his producer, saying:

"Seriously, I've been asking our producer, Tommy Roy, the same thing."

Thomas then turned to the NBC Sports and Golf Channel producer, Tommy Roy, and said:

"Dang Tommy, throw us a bone!"

Justin Thomas had a decent start to the tournament, scoring 2-under 71 in the first round. However, on the par-4 third, Thomas faltered with a triple bogey. He rebounded with four birdies on the 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th on the front nine. On the back nine, he scored three birdies on the 12th, 15th, and 18th against two bogeys on the 11th and 18th holes.

The 31-year-old is currently tied for 30th with Akshay Bhatia, Nico Echavarria, and Taylor Pendrith. He's seven shots behind the leader of the leaderboard, Tom Hoge. Will Zalatoris and Hideki Matsuyama are tied for second, scoring 8-under 65.

Justin Thomas says the Sentry has "changed a lot"

Justin Thomas has a great record at The Sentry where he has won on two occasions — 2017 and 2020. In 2017, he won the tournament by three strokes over Hideki Matsuyama. In 2020, Thomas, Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Reed were tied after 72 holes. Schauffele was eliminated by a birdie on the first hole. Thomas won the tournament by a birdie on the third extra hole.

In his eight starts at Sentry, he has two wins and five top-5 finishes. In the pre-tournament press conference, he was asked about how the Sentry has evolved over the years. Thomas said (via ASAP Sports):

"It has. It's changed a lot. Before in the past it was kind of, it was dependent on how many people won tournaments. Like, I remember I think my first year playing there was maybe only 30 people. And I had years where it was kind of 38 or 39. And then it -- so it always fluctuated, which kind of made it cool and different."

Thomas said it was an honor to start the year at the Sentry. He added that the wide fairways had ample scoring opportunities for golfers, though windy conditions at the tournament were challenging. He further said:

"But, no, there's no place I want to be starting my year more than Kapalua, so last year watching I was like it sucked pretty honest, so I'm glad to be back."

Let's look at Justin Thomas' performances at the Sentry in the last few years:

  • 2016: T21 (score: 279, -13)
  • 2017: WIN (score: 270, -22)
