The Genesis Invitational is being moved to San Diego. On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, addressing a press conference at the ongoing 2025 Farmers Insurance Open at Torry Pines South Course, Jason Day shared his views about the significance of the course and with regards to Tiger Woods.
This golf course has always been a favorite for Tiger Woods as it has played an important role in his career. When asked about the relationship between Woods and this golf course, Jason Day said:
“Yeah, I understand your question. Back when Tiger was playing and winning what, eight of these, it was the event to come to because of, you know, not only how big the tournament was and what Tiger brought to the event as well, the crowds were huge. But with that being said, I still think – that’s a hard question for me because I don’t know how to give you the correct answer. Like you said, I’m very loyal to this area, I’m very loyal to this golf tournament. I love this area, I love the people here. I also love golf tournaments and I love the golf course."
When asked about the decision to change of the venue and Tiger Woods' success here, Jason Day promptly replied,
"I love it because I've had good memories here. I think -- if it comes here I can understand why they've come here. Obviously Tiger's had a huge amount of success here, it's not that far from L.A., it's just down the road, the infrastructure's here already. It just depends on if the city wants to hold it and what that would look like."
Two combinations that forced the change of the venue for the Genesis Invitational
The Genesis Invitational, hosted by Tiger Woods, has been relocated from its regular venue, the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, to San Diego due to recent brushfires. The tournament will still take place as scheduled.
On January 20, 2025, CBS Sports’ Rick Gehman informed on X that two combinations were the prime reason for selecting Torrey Pines as a make-shift hosting venue for the Genesis Invitational.
“The combination of 1) keeping it in California and 2) proximity to the original event – were some of the factors that pushed it over the edge."
Pebble Beach, PGA West, and TPC Scottsdale were considered as replacement venues for the Tiger Woods-hosted tournament. However, Torrey Pines was chosen for its location in California and proximity to Riviera, about 125 miles away.
Torry Pines also has a unique advantage in that it has two championship courses. Once the ongoing Farmers Insurance Open is completed at the North Course, the South Course will certainly be ready to host the Genesis Invitational.
