"The on your own success list is very short, Justin’s dad Mike Thomas had a very good track record helping his son, he’s a good fall back if Justin needs help, at the end of the day when your expectations are to be a top 5 player but your putting stats are some of the worst on tour it’s a tough fit."
Justin Thomas' father Mike is a PGA professional and has worked closely with the American golfer since the early days of his career. The father-son duo has an amazing partnership.
Justin Thomas opens up about playing without a coach
Ahead of the 2025 The Sentry, Justin Thomas attended a press conference on Jan 1 where he opened up about playing without a coach these days. He said (via ASAP Sports):
"It's good. I try to, as hard I could, try to remember how -- I never want to look backward, obviously I want like whatever's going to happen to be the new norm, or, if you will, I never want to -- there's certain things in my DNA in my swing that kind of made me, me.
"But I feel like I can maybe try to better that version, and I feel, I just tried to really look at how I did things in the past, and I'm like, you know, my dad was working at the club, so I would see him a handful of times a year, just because he was busy. So it was like I'd take video, send it to him, talk here and there, whatever it was, but for the most part I could, I knew the answer almost like before I was sending something," he added.
Meanwhile, Thomas teed it up at the ongoing The Sentry Tournament on Thursday, January 2. However, he had a rough start with a round of 2-under 71. The two-time Major winner teed it up on the first hole and shot a triple bogey on the third hole.
He shot two birdies on the fourth and fifth holes and then added two more birdies on the front nine. However, on the back nine, he shot two bogeys and three birdies. With a score of 2 under, he was tied for 30th place. Tom Hoge took the early lead in the game after shooting a round of 64 in the first round.
