Tiger Woods' former coach Hank Haney shared a post on social media where Rory McIlroy was seen working on his swing. After a year in which he won two PGA Tour events but fell short by an agonizing stroke of breaking his Major drought, he's looking to tinker with his swing.
Haney reacted to it with a few insightful words.
The former coach said:
"On the right track, but what do I know?"
This seems to be a tongue-in-cheek comment, as Haney does have the experience working with Woods and other golfers to know whether or not McIlroy's work to improve is worthwhile. It is also a sarcastic reference to a conflict the two had after the U.S. Open when Haney criticized McIlroy's loss and the golfer responded.
One golf journalist pointed out that McIlroy's swing had changed over the years. This may or may not be a bad thing, and it may have nothing to do with his Major championship drought, but it did happen.
Now, McIlroy seems to be analyzing to see what has happened and where things might have gone wrong. Whether or not the work will pay off for a more successful 2025 campaign remains to be seen, but Woods' former coach believes it certainly could.
What did Rory McIlroy say about Hank Haney after the U.S. Open?
At the U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy bogeyed three of the final four holes to lose to Bryson DeChambeau. The golfer's club selection came under fire, but he also missed short putts that have been virtual locks for most of his career.
McIlroy and his caddie Harry Diamond were criticized for the loss, which was one of the lows of his career. Via Mirror, McIlroy hit back at Tiger Woods' former coach, and Smylie Kaufman, the two people who were most vocal about it.
McIlroy said:
“Hank Haney has never been in that position. Smylie has been in that position once, and I love Smylie, and he was out there with us on 18."
He continued:
“But just because Harry is not as vocal or loud with his words as other caddies, it doesn't mean that he doesn't say anything and that he doesn't do anything. I just wish that, you know, these guys that criticize when things don't go my way, they never say anything good when things do go my way."
Haney later clarified that he didn't think Diamond was a bad caddie or that he didn't work for Rory McIlroy. He just said that he felt as if Diamond made a crucial mistake late in the U.S. Open and that it translated to a loss for McIlroy, who has been searching for a Major title since 2014.
