Tiger Woods's former coach Hank Haney slammed the 'meaningless statistic' of the 'fairways hit' in a new post on his X account. It all started when golf teacher Brian Manzella posted a list of his all-time best golf swings.
Manzella ranked Ben Hogan's 1953 swing as number one and Woods' 2000 swing on the second spot. In response to his tweet, one of the users tagged Hank Haney and said that Woods' "Hank Haney swing era is so under appreciated."
Haney worked with Tiger Woods for a span of six years from 2004 to 2010. He quoted the tweet and wrote:
"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but no one is entitled to their own facts."
In response, another X user commented on Haney's post and said that Tiger Woods from 2006 to 2007 was 'one of the most aesthetically pleasing swings to watch.' He recalled how Woods won the British Open with an iron. Haney agreed with his statement.
However, another user pointed out that when Woods was being coached by Haney, despite the swing, he didn't land his shots on the fairway enough. Haney defended Woods' swing and said:
"One of the most meaningless statistics in golf, fairways hit. Top 5 in Strokes Gained Off the Tee was far more important."
Tiger Woods won six Majors while working with Haney and also secured 31 PGA Tour titles. Haney and Woods' partnership ended in 2010.
How did Tiger Woods perform in the first round at the Open Championship 2024?
Tiger Woods is currently participating in the Open Championship 2024. The tournament is scheduled from July 18-21 at the Royal Troon, Scotland.
This is Woods' fifth tournament and fourth Major this year. In the last two Majors, the US Open and the PGA Championship, he missed the cut. At Augusta, he recorded his worst score in a Major. He'd have hoped for a turnaround at the final Major of the year.
However, the first round didn't go very well for the former World No. 1. He notched a birdie on par-4 3rd hole. However, it all went downhill from the fourth hole. He scored bogeys on the 4th, 7th, and 8th holes. He also scored a double bogey on the par-3 5th hole on the front nine.
On the back nine, he scored another double bogey on the 11th hole. He scored two more bogeys on the 12th, 17th and 18th holes. He scored the second birdie of the round on the 13th hole.
Tiger Woods finished the first round of the Open Championship 2024 with a score of 8-over 79 and was tied at 140th position. He'll need something exceptional in the second round to make the Friday cut at the tournament.
