One of Tiger Woods' most famous recent anecdotes concerns the 2023 conversation in which he told Scottie Scheffler that he didn't take divots when he was "flushing it." Several months later, he gave context to this very unique golf term.
The explanation came last week during Woods' appearance in a YouTube video for popular golf influencer Grant Horvat's channel. The 15-time major champion said "flushing it" refers to shots made in non-pressure situations.
"If I’m just here flushing it, with no wind, no I don’t take divots. It depends on how the wind is. Now, if I’m on that range, I would feel that wind slightly into me, I’m going to start leaning on it. Now, if we had no wind, and I’m just hitting shots with no consequence or distance — I’m just sending it — yeah, I don’t take a lot of turf. I sweep it," Tiger Woods said. [10:31]
Interestingly, seconds earlier in the same video, Woods acknowledged that he does hit the turf in competitive situations:
"Well it depends on what shot I’m playing. It is true [I don't take divots], when I’m hitting my best. But if I have to hit a shot, I’m going to hit turf. I’m going to lean the shaft. I’m going to take turf."
Grant Horvat's video with Tiger Woods received more than 1.6 million views in five days. At the same time, the channel has gained several thousand new followers and has already passed the 1 million mark.
Recalling the "flushing it" conversation between Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler
The famous conversation between Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler occurred while they were filming a promotional video for TaylorMade, a major sponsor of both players. The clip posted on the company's YouTube channel in May 2023 has received more than 700,000 views and has been shared by hundreds of other users across all social media platforms.
"Hey what's up with the no divots?" Scottie Scheffler asked.
"Why do you take a divot?" Tiger Woods said.
"I don't know, I'm asking you."
"Just picking it."
"Do you do that always, when you warm up or?"
"When I'm swinging well I don't take divots."
"You've always been like that or you just practice it?"
"No when I'm flushing it I don't take divots."
Woods last played an official tournament in July 2024, when he missed the cut at The Open Championship. Since then, his only start on the course was at the PNC Championship, where he tied for second with his son Charlie.
The 15-time major champion has not officially announced when he will begin his 2025 season. Thanks to a new exemption category created by the PGA Tour, he can play in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the second signature event of the season.
