Tiger Woods and his son Charlie are tied for the lead at 13-under in the 2024 PNC Championship. Following their performance on Saturday (December 21), the 15-time Major champion insisted it was teamwork that enabled them to achieve the result.
Speaking from the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, where the event was held, Tiger Woods praised Charlie's work, particularly on the putting green. This was part of what he said (via ASAP Sports):
"It's a scramble. So we're trying to pull off each and every shot for each other, and to ham-and-egg, and I think we did that great pretty much the entire day...We picked each other up, which was great. And Charlie made pretty much most of the putts today."
Charlie Woods, for his part, also talked about the team's performance. Here is how he put it:
"I didn't hit it great but Dad saved me on a couple of them and I rolled them in."
The PNC Championship is played in two rounds of 18 holes in a scramble format. In this format, the players on the team hit the tee shot and then choose the ball that ends up in a better lie. From there, they play their respective second shots and the process is repeated until the ball is holed.
Tiger Woods and Charlie are tied for the lead with defending champion Bernhard Langer and his son Jason, and 2022 champion Vijay Singh and his son Qass.
A look at Tiger Woods and Charlie's performance in the first round of the PNC Championship
Tiger Woods and Charlie got off to a hot start in the first round of the PNC Championship, birdieing their first three holes. From there, they made three more birdies without a bogey to finish the front nine at 6-under 30.
The back nine was even better for Team Woods. They birdied the 10th and after making par on the 11th, they made five consecutive birdies (12th through 16th). They made par on the 17th and made their final birdie of the day on the 18th.
This last birdie gave them the clubhouse lead as they temporarily broke the tie they had with several teams. Eventually, Team Langer and Team Singh tied them for first place.
Saturday's score tied Team Woods' second-best round of the PNC Championship. Their best 18-hole score so far is 15 under, which they achieved in the second round of the 2021 edition. They shot 13-under for the first time in the first round of the 2022 event.
Team Woods has played in the PNC Championship four times. Their best finish came in the 2021 edition, when they tied for second at 25-under, two strokes behind winners John Daly and John Daly II.
