Tiger Woods knows better than most how valuable a good pair of golf shoes is. After taking an estimated 40 million steps across his golf career, the legendary player is launching a brand-new golf shoe for the first time with his new brand. Sun Day Red has plenty of gear that Woods uses, but these will be the first branded shoes.
They will be made of leather, a rarity on the golf course, and retail for $250. There are three core colorways: White and Silver, Black and Silver, and Gray and Navy. There are two alternative options in Black and Red and White and Red. Those are available for $275.
In the ad for the shoes, Woods says:
"40 million steps. That many steps will teach you a lot, like how to harness the power of the ground beneath you. Or how standing firm can send you soaring. Or how a fraction of an inch can be the difference between good and great. But what 40 million steps will really teach you is that to build a high-performance golf shoe, you have to start from the ground up."
The shoes are officially called the Pioneer Cypress and are available now. No pre-order is necessary, and they are expected to arrive within a week or so from ordering.
Tiger Woods' shoe designer opens up on process
Sun Day Red Executive Creative Director Charley Hudak partnered with Tiger Woods to make shoes that the 15-time major winner liked and could use. If one of the greatest athletes of all time signs off on a shoe, it generally indicates some level of quality.
Hudak said he wasn't exactly sure when the process started, but these shoes have been in the making for a while (via Golf.com).
“It was clearly like a Blue Sky project where, you know, we just had to satisfy one individual and our mentality was like if we can satisfy that individual, we would satisfy the entire Community. Building from those four pillars, we got to work with [Woods’] physio, his trainer and, we did all the research and got him going through the rehabilitation process at the same time.”
The four pillars he mentioned are fit, comfort, performance, and style, all of which have been carefully implemented for the newest Sun Day Red launch. He also said that he and his team deferred to Woods. They wanted an athletic look, but Woods wanted something more classic.
“We talked about some of his old shoes that he wore and one of his things was that they weren’t meeting his criteria and I think that’s kind of one of the big reasons why the opportunity to work with him came about.”
Tiger Woods shocked the world when he left Nike late last year after nearly 30 years of partnership, eventually launching Sun Day Red.
