Like all professional golfers, Tiger Woods carries 14 clubs in his bag when he plays competitive golf. But the 15-time Major champion knows exactly what he would choose if his equipment were suddenly reduced to just one club.
In a promotional video for his TGL team, Jupiter Links Golf Club, Tiger Woods named the 5-iron as the club he would choose to play the entire round with if necessary. According to Woods, this is the club that would make it easiest for him to "put up a score."
This is how Tiger Woods explained it [0:08 and onwards]:
"5 iron, because I grew up with a 7 iron and I used to make a 7 iron do everything, from putt, chip to drive, but if I had to have my druthers, if I have to hit it further, a 5 iron reaches more par 4's and then I can always open it back up, and I can always putt with it."
According to Golf Monthly, in 2023, Tiger Woods had a 210-yard range with his 5-iron. This is Woods' stock yardage with all the clubs in his bag:
- Driver: 295
- 3-Wood: 275
- 5-Wood: 255
- 3-Iron: 240
- 4-Iron: 225
- 5-Iron: 210
- 6-Iron: 195
- 7-Iron: 180
- 8-Iron: 165
- 9-Iron: 150
- Pitching Wedge: 135
- Sand Wedge: 120
- Lob Wedge: 100
When will Tiger Woods play again?
Tiger Woods has been out of official tournaments since missing the cut at The Open Championship in July 2024. He underwent back surgery in September and did not play in any golf events until the PNC Championship in December, where he and his son Charlie Woods finished second, losing in a playoff to Bernhard Langer and his son Jason.
Woods' next event was his TGL debut, which took place on the second day of the league. His team, Jupiter Links Golf Club, was soundly defeated by Collin Morikawa's Los Angeles Golf Club, 12 points to 1.
Woods' next appearance will be in the TGL when his team takes on Rory McIlroy's Boston Common Golf. The match will be played on the fourth day of the league, Monday (Jan. 27).
Woods has a chance to play in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the second Signature event of the season, from January 30 to February 2, thanks to a special exemption granted by the PGA Tour to winners of more than 80 tournaments on the circuit. However, Woods has not yet confirmed that he will play at Pebble Beach.
Two weeks later is the Genesis Invitational, hosted by Woods himself. This tournament also has signature event status and Woods could choose it to kick off his 2025 season.
