Xander Schauffele and Justin Rose are joining Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's new TGL golf league. The Olympic gold medalists are expected to be officially announced by the league today (February 14).
Both Schauffele and Rose bring impressive resumes to the new league and are the number six and 36 ranked golfers in the world respectively. Rose won the 2018 PGA Championship and was ranked number one in the world around that time.
Schauffele earned three wins on the PGA Tour in 2021-2022 and is poised for another big year this year. He could very well move up even further than his number six ranking right now.
These golfers bring the league's total up to 11. They want to fill six teams of three golfers, so they still need to sign seven more. Assuming they aren't going to ask any LIV golfers to join, there are still plenty of PGA Tour stars out there who would probably be interested.
They recently signed Billy Horschel and Max Homa as well. Here's the full roster right now:
- Max Homa
- Tiger Woods
- Rory McIlroy
- Billy Horschel
- Matt Fitzpatrick
- Justin Thomas
- Jon Rahm
- Collin Morikawa
- Adam Scott
- Justin Rose
- Xander Schauffele
Tiger Woods is the biggest name attached to this league, and TGL is arguably his project. He is looking forward to helping usher the game of golf into a new era. Woods said this about TGL (via Golfweek):
“TGL is the next evolution within professional golf, and I am committed to helping lead it into the future. Embracing technology to create this unique environment gives us the ability to move our sport into primetime on a consistent basis alongside so many of sports’ biggest events."
His co-host, Rory McIlroy, has similar dreams:
“I have the utmost respect for the game of golf, and the TGL, while rooted in the traditions of the game, is taking a bold step into the increasingly tech-fueled future of sports."
With Rose and Schauffele on board now, the two stars inch closer to their ultimate goal. The league is expected to kick off in 2024.
Tiger Woods asked for Ross Berlin to help TGL
Ross Berlin, a longtime industry veteran, was asked by Tiger Woods to join TGL. He will serve as the senior vice president of player relations. Per Golfweek, Berlin said:
“Tiger and Rory when they got involved kept mentioning to me that I would be a perfect fit to fill a role with this new enterprise. I couldn’t have written a better script about returning to the game than in this capacity and be able to re-establish a lot of great relationships with leading players in the game. It’s a dream come true for me so I had to jump at it.”
Berlin has played a major role in determining the roster and will continue to do so until the full 18 player-roster is complete. He's a big reason they were able to sign Horschel, Homa, Rose, and Schauffele, so Woods' decision is already paying major dividends for the league.
