Tiger Woods knows Pinehurst No. 2 well, the venue of the 2024 U.S. Open set to begin on Thursday, June 13. Woods has seemingly made new equipment choices for the Major, who arrived at the course with three modifications to his bag.

As reported by GolfWRX, Tiger Woods included two wedges with the same slopes (56°, 60°) in his bag but with a different design compared to the previous ones. The third addition to his bag is an iron 2, which replaces his 5-wood.

The two wedges are TaylorMade MG4 "Proto". They have a steeper angle at the start of the clubhead compared to the ones he previously used.

The change in his bag might have something to do with the challenges presented by Pinehurst No. 2, a course that favors the short game. These two new wedge selections give Woods more confidence in his game from both the rough and the sand.

This could also explain the replacement of the 5-wood with a TaylorMade P770 2021 2-iron. Woods will be looking to avoid high shots on a high-wind course like Pinehurst No. 2.

Here is a look at Tiger Woods' bag for the 2024 U.S. Open:

  • Driver: TaylorMade Qi10 LS (10.5 degrees @9.75) with Graphite Design Tour AD VF 6 X shaft
  • 3-wood: TaylorMade Qi10 Tour (15 degrees @13.5) with Graphite Design Tour AD VF 7 X
  • Irons: 2023 TaylorMade P770 (3), TaylorMade P7TW (4-PW) with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100
  • Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS prototype
  • Grip: Ping PP58 Blackout
  • Ball: Bridgestone Tour B X (2024)

A look at Tiger Woods' history at Pinehurst No. 2

Tiger Woods played at Pinehurst No. 2 in the 1999 and 2005 editions of the U.S. Open where he achieved excellent results. In 1999, he finished tied for third with Vijay Singh with a score of 1 over, two strokes behind champion Payne Stewart.

Six years later, Woods returned to Pinehurst Resort, again to play at the U.S. Open. Woods fell just two strokes short of what would have been his tenth Major title as he finished second with a score of 2 over, two strokes behind Michael Campbell.

In 22 appearances at the U.S. Open, Woods has won three times (2000, 2002, 2008), with eight other Top 10s, including two second places.

Going into his third U.S. Open at the venue, Woods’ experience could come in handy at a circuit that is not easy to navigate. The 15-time Major winner is paired with Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick for the opening two rounds. Can Tiger Woods cause an upset at Pinehurst 2 come Sunday?
