Tommy Fleetwood felt that Rory McIlroy's controversial driver snap at the BMW Championship was not intentional. He said it was just a strong enough lean that damaged the club.

Last week, Fleetwood and McIlroy were in Castle Pines Golf Club in Denver for the BMW Championship. While McIlroy tied for eleventh at 6-under, Fleetwood finished at 8-under for a T5 finish. During the final round of the event, controversy emerged when the Northern Irishman snapped his club while bending down to pick up his tee.

On Sunday, August 25, during the post-round interview, Tommy Fleetwood was asked about the controversy.

"I don't think so," he said. "I think the little -- the strong lean and snap probably took that out."

The Rules of Golf state that players are eligible to replace a damaged club, except in cases of abuse. Earlier, the three-time FedEx Cup champion had thrown his 3-wood into the water after missing the fairway during the second round.
