The Genesis Invitational is reportedly set to be moved from Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Southern California, to a new location due to concerns over the LA wildfires. Multiple reports suggest that the final event of the West Coast swing could be relocated to Torrey Pines Golf Course, situated in San Diego.
For past two weeks, Southern California, particularly the Los Angeles region has been impacted by severe wildfires. The Genesis Invitational was initially scheduled to take place from February 13 to 16 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. However, the Pacific Palisades is one of the hotspots for the fires resulting in the relocation of the event.
On Sunday, January 19, Rick Gehman of CBS Sports reported that the third Signature Event of the season was all set to be moved to Torrey Pines, situated 123 miles away from Riviera.
Fans online had mixed reactions to the reports of relocating the Genesis Invitational to Torrey Pines. Many were not in favor of the golf course hosting two events on the PGA Tour. However, some fans agreed with the rationale behind the move.
Here's a look at some reactions:
"Torrey twice?" one fan wrote.
"Terrible, find a new course," another fan posted.
"How many people with a tee time are fuming right now lol," this fan commented.
"Huge miss hear. Torrey twice is a total fail. This event screamed of an opportunity to take the PGA TOUR to Cypress Point," another fan opined.
"f course it's about the $$$. Corporate hospitality tents are the big money makers. Would be hard to figure all that out at a new venue. Can now just build it once , use it twice, and still make all the money," one fan wrote.
"From a logistics standpoint makes sense that the Genesis is at Torrey. I’ve been going to the Byron Nelson since 2021—people who only watch the Tour on TV would be shocked by the setup at tournaments. All the grandstands, hospitality, bars, pro shop, etc. Much of that will already be in place from the Farmers," this fan remarked.
