Following the tough first round, Tyrrell Hatton voiced his frustrations with the Royal Troon setup for the Open Championship. He felt that the organizers didn't put any tees forward, making reaching the par-5s on the front nine difficult.
On Thursday, July 18, Hatton had a difficult day as he carded a 2-over par 73 in the opening round. He failed to make a single birdie throughout the day and bogeyed back-to-back holes on the 14th and 15th.
During the post-round interview, Tyrrell Hatton expressed his dissatisfaction with the harsh conditions at Royal Troon.
"They didn't put any tees forward," the LIV Golfer said. "You can't reach any of the par-5s on the front nine. Was it 15 or 16, the par-5, you're hitting a 4-iron off it. Tell me a good par-5 where you're hitting 4-iron off the tee. There isn't one.
"Even though they've moved the tee back on 17, which I think is a shame, it's still with the wind today, you're hitting 5-iron and hoping it can stay on the green," he added.
Fans had mixed opinions on Tyrrell Hatton's comments. Some fans supported his worries while many felt he was complaining unnecessarily. Here's a look at some of the reactions:
"Hatton being Hatton," It doesn’t matter in the scheme of major golf on this. Tomorrow he could shoot a 65 and say it’s the best course lol dudes also critical of Augusta being a “bad course”
"Cry baby"
"The course is kind of monotonous, and not a great setup IMO, but everyone is playing the same place," this fan commented.
"Par fives are supposed to play as 5 shots not gauranteed birdie holes for the exhibition golfers," one fan wrote.
"Funny how the so called golfers are giving T Hatton grief when not a single one would even break 100. Here is an idea, how about qualifying for the next major and outplay him or ANYBODY else," one user opined.
"Hattons complaining is out of control, I’m glad he went to LIV. Doesn’t matter how they set up Troon, he’d be complaining regardless. You’re a professional athlete and it’s the open, it’s supposed to be difficult," another user remarked.
