As per the announcement by the R&A, The Open 2027 will be played at St Andrews from July 15-18, 2027. The tournament was last held at this venue in 2022, and was won by Cameron Smith. The 2027 instalment of this popular tournament will be its 155th.
Despite being a legendary and historical golf course, the choice of ‘the Old Course’ for the 155th Open has not gone well with some fans. A handle on X (formerly Twitter) called the announcement ‘horrible news’.
"Horrible news, St Andrew’s is sadly no longer a championship course. The British Open should not be played on this course, it’s simply too easy for pro golf in 2027."
"Unfair," another fan wrote.
"Worst course on the rota," added another fan.
"Borefest on TV then," another fan added.
"It’s time to bring Turnberry back into the rotation. Get over your TDS & get a grip. It’s too good to ignore for political reasons," wrote another fan.
"Boring Open, terrible for spectators," claimed another fan.
Organizers of The Open excited after course announcement for 2027
While making the announcement of The 2027 Open Championship taking place at the Old Course at St Andrews, Mark Darbon, the Chief Executive of The R&A said:
“There is something incredibly special about The Open being played on the Old Course and so many of the great champions have walked these fairways since the first staging here in 1873.
“St Andrews is the home of golf and it generates a unique atmosphere for the fans and the players as well as providing an amazing spectacle on television and digitally for millions of viewers around the world.
“It promises to be another milestone occasion at one of sport’s greatest and most historic venues and we will be doing everything we can to make it a memorable experience for everyone involved.”
The Chief Executive of St Andrews Links Trust further added:
“We’re delighted to be working with The R&A, Scottish Government and VisitScotland to see The Open return to St Andrews in 2027. The 155th Open will be the 31st occasion The Old Course has hosted this great Championship.
“The St Andrews Links Trust golf courses are open to all and are an intrinsic part of this historic town. We look forward to The 155th Open inspiring the journeys of many more golfers who wish to create unforgettable memories at the Home of Golf.”
The challenges offered at the Old Course are not easy to meet. There are blind shots, unpredictable winds and also deep bunkers. That makes golfing an extremely tough job, even for the best players in the world.
Following The Open 2027, St Andrews is also in line to host the 2032 and 2037 editions of the event. The course, located in Scotland, often guarantees sell-out crowds.
