Ludvig Aberg is making his debut at The Open Championship this year. The Swede had a rough start to the event as he finished the first round with a score of 4 over 75.
After a tough day on the golf course, Aberg took questions from the press. The Swede cited putting as his main problem in the first round and said that he would focus on improving in this area on Friday.
"It was definitely a challenge," Ludvig Aberg said (via ASAP Sports). "I felt like we handled it tee to green pretty well, to be honest. Every time we were somewhat out of position, we got it back to the front of the green and gave ourselves the easy shot coming back."
"Just didn't putt it very well. Had a very, very poor day on the greens. That's what the score reflects."
He added:
"The good thing for me is that it's hard. The winning score isn't really running away. We just try to chip away and then make sure that we keep hitting good shots and then try to hit the putts and read the putts a little bit better tomorrow."
Ludvig Aberg is currently in the midst of only his fourth major championship experience. He started in this type of event at the 2024 Masters, where he tied for second place. He then played in the PGA Championship, where he was cut. At the third major of the season, the US Open, Aberg finished tied for 12th.
A look at Ludvig Aberg's first round at The 2024 Open Championship
The front nine of the first round of The 2024 Open Championship was the best part of the day for Ludvig Aberg. The Swede birdied the first hole and then parred the next three. He bogeyed the 5th and 8th and made the turn at 1 over.
His main problems came on the back nine. Aberg bogeyed the 10th, 12th, 13th, and 16th and only managed to birdie the 18th to finish at 4 over.
As he pointed out in his interview, Aberg had negative putting stats for the round. The Swede three-putted two holes, missed six of eight putts between 5 and 10 feet, and made only one putt in four attempts between 10 and 20 feet.
Aberg was only effective on putts under five feet. In that range, he attempted 16 and made 15. However, his number of putts used during the round (33) was well above the tournament average.
The Swede is T82 going into the second round. The provisional leader is England's Daniel Brown with a score of 6 under. Shane Lowry and Justin Thomas are leading the chasing pack.
