Legendary caddie Billy Foster, who currently carries Matt Fitzpatrick's bag, has announced that he will reduce the number of tournaments he plays in from 2025. This is Foster's 43rd season as a professional caddie.
The caddie himself announced his decision in an Instagram post, stating that he will continue to work with Fitzpatrick, but will only play in around 15 tournaments this season.
Fitzpatrick's caddie also left himself open to new projects. This is part of the text of his post:
"Well 2025 will be a little bit different but looking forward to a positive start to the season here in Maui. After 42 seasons it’s time to try a job share with Fitz & travel a little bit less."
He added:
"I will still be doing about 15 tournaments but will try to look at other opportunities with re speaking, the book, Sky Tv (might need the [red] button), helping aspiring young golfers with course management etc (Open to offers)."
Matt Fitzpatrick and his bagman participated in 21 PGA Tour events, three other DP World Tour events and the 2024 Paris Olympics. The player only finished in the top 10 three times, all on the American-based circuit.
Who is Matt Fitzpatrick's caddie, Billy Foster?
Billy Foster told Golf Monthly in 2023 that his relationship with professional golf began in 1975 when he first attended The Open Championship as a spectator. The Englishman also claimed that Seve Ballesteros has been his golfing idol ever since.
Foster began his career as a caddie in 1982 and the first player he worked with was South African Hugh Baiocchi. He quickly became one of the most respected and sought after bagmans in the world and his career has included working with stars such as his idol Seve Ballesteros, Sergio Garcia, Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke, Tiger Woods, and Lee Westwood.
Despite working with such outstanding players, it was not until 2022 that Billy Foster had the chance of work with a major championship winner. That year, Matt Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Open, his first major championship, with Foster taking care of his bag.
Foster and Fitzpatrick began working together in 2018, after the former ended his stint with Lee Westwood. Fitzpatrick has done well working with Foster, if their results over the period are anything to go by.
With Foster on his team, Fitzpatrick won the 2022 US Open and the 2023 RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour. He also has four of his eight victories on the DP World Tour (2018 Omega European Masters, 2020 DP World Tour Championship, 2021 Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucia Masters, and 2023 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship), and has played in two editions of the Ryder Cup, winning once.
