Viktor Hovland suffered a broken pinky toe in his right foot just before the start of The Sentry 2025. However, the Norwegian confirmed that it will not prevent him from playing in the PGA Tour season opener.
Hovland told the PGA Tour News Service how he injured his toe. He also briefly explained why he would be able to play despite the fracture.
This is part of what Viktor Hovland said:
"It's doing all right, actually. A lot better than anticipated. Flew 24 hours from Norway, got back to the hotel room, I was so tired I fell asleep on the bed with my clothes on. Woke up in the middle of the night to turn the lights down and just stubbed my toe on the bed frame." [0:03 onwards]
The Norwegian had this to say about his chances of playing in The Sentry 2025:
"Most likely, yeah. It's not bad, I mean, it's the best toe you can break for the golf swing [the right pinky toe]."
As a right-handed golfer, Viktor Hovland's right foot is in the back position on the golf stand. As a result, the pinky toe of his right foot is barely touched when he swings.
A look at Viktor Hovland's career performance in The Sentry
The 2025 edition will be Viktor Hovland's fifth appearance on The Sentry. The Norwegian has never finished in the top 10 and has only reached the top 25 twice.
Hovland made his debut on the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in 2021, at the beginning of his third professional season. He finished tied for 31st at 11-under. A year later, Hovland returned to The Sentry, but once again finished outside the top 25. This time he finished tied for 30th with a score of 14-under.
In 2023, the Norwegian had his best season-opening result on the PGA Tour, finishing tied for 18th with a score of 17 under. It was the start of the best season of his career to date, in which he won three tournaments and the FedEx Cup title. In 2024, he finished tied for 22nd with a score of 21 under.
His best round in the event was the first one of the 2024 edition, in which he shot a 65. A less fortunate round was the fourth one of the 2021 edition, in which he carded a 76.
Hovland began his professional career in 2019 and earned his PGA Tour card in 2020. He has won six official tournaments to date, as well as the FedEx Cup title in 2023. He has also won the unofficial Hero World Challenge twice.
His major championship record includes 20 starts, with four top-10s. His best finish to date is a tie for second at the 2023 PGA Championship.
