After suffering a toe injury a couple of days ago, Viktor Hovland has provided an update on his availability for the Sentry. The Norwegian star stated that there is no final decision on his participation in the PGA Tour opener, but he will try his best to tee off this week.
Hovland, who last played during the FedEx Cup Playoffs, was set to return to action at the Sentry 2025. The inaugural event of the new season will take place from Thursday, January 2, to Sunday, January 5, at the Kapalua Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.
On Sunday, December 29, Viktor Hovland told Espen Blaker of Eurosport that he fractured his little toe after hitting it on the edge of his bed. He added that while his participation remains uncertain, he will make every effort to compete in the Sentry.
"I'm hoping that taping it up and painkillers will be enough to get me through the week.," he said as per Eurosport.
Can Viktor Hovland win the Sentry? Odds explored
Viktor Hovland isn't among the top five favorites for the Sentry 2025, but he is still one of the strong contenders this week. As per Sportsbook Review, he is +2500 to win the first event of the 2024 season. Scottie Scheffler was the favorite at +300 this week, but now Xander Schauffele is the favorite to claim the season opener at Kapalua.
Speaking of past performances, the six-time PGA Tour winner is yet to achieve a top-ten finish at the Sentry after four appearances. His T18 finish in 2023 was his best result and his only top-20 finish in the event.
Hovland's recent performances have been mixed. In 2024, he managed just two top-ten finishes, in contrast to the previous season, when he bagged three titles, including the FedEx Cup. This year, the 27-year-old Norwegian star made thirteen cuts in sixteen starts, with a T2 finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship as his best result of the year.
The Sentry 2025 will be the season opener and the first of eight signature events of the year. It will be a 60-player, no-cut event and will feature players who finished in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup 2024 season as well as PGA Tour winners this year. Chris Kirk is the defending champion, having won his ninth PGA Tour title after beating Sahith Theegala by one stroke.
