At the finals of the 2024 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, Auburn Tigers registered a victory over Florida State. Auburn senior J.M. Butler was instrumental in orchestrating this victory at the La Costa as he managed to guide his team to their first-ever NCAA Title win.
Towards the end of the game on hole 18, Butler failed to make the putt but was conceded par for an important 2-1 win over Florida State. Immediately after missing the putt, Buttler's teammates came running toward him, with the player also visibly emotional after leading his school to the title.
Throughout his final game against Luke Clanton of Florida State, J.M. Butler was not under any threat. While he was always a step ahead of Clanton, the match turned heavily in Butler's favor after Clanton hit the ball into the water on the 15th hole.
Before winning the NCAA Men's Golf Championship, the Auburn Tigers won the SEC Championship and the NCAA Regional. However, winning the NCAA Men's Golf Championship is a different ball game altogether and something that will make the whole school proud.
Auburn Tigers' J.M. Butler says college career isn't complete without a National Championship
On the amateur circuit, J.M Butler is one of the most well-known golfers. Over the course of his career, Butler has won several prestigious amateur titles including the Tiger Invitational and the Kentucky Amateur. However, his victory at the NCAA Men's National Championship will be his biggest win so far.
After beating Luke Clanton at La Costa, Butler talked about his performance in an interview. The youngster mentioned that a college career is incomplete without a national championship. He dedicated this victory to his teammates and said (as quoted by Associated Press):
"A college career isn’t complete without a national championship. This is for all my teammates who push me every single day"
Further in the interview, J.M. Butler mentioned he did not feel unnerved. Butler said that he had prepared for this moment, and had worked extremely hard for this. The 2024 NCAA Men's Championship winner said:
“I was feeling nothing. I’ve prepared for this moment, I’ve worked extremely hard for this. I knew I had to get out of my way and I’d come out on top.”
