Bryson DeChambeau arrived at Royal Troon Golf Club as one of the favorites to win the 2024 Open Championship. He had a tough start, but at the end of the Round 1, he showed signs of his extraordinary quality,

DeChambeau made a spectacular eagle on the 16th hole, including an astonishing putt from downtown. The moment was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the event's official account and reposted by other users, with hundreds of thousands of views.

Bryson DeChambeau began his performance on the par-5, 565-yard 16th hole with a 358-yard tee shot down the right fairway. From there, he reached the green with an extraordinary 198-yard shot that left the ball 54 feet, 11 inches from the pin.

DeChambeau hit another shot of exceptional quality when he used his putter to take advantage of a slope on the green to the left of his shot line.

It was the best moment of the day for the newly crowned US Open champion. Up to that point, Bryson DeChambeau had a score of 7 over, the product of five bogeys and a double bogey (no birdies). After his eagle on the 16th, DeChambeau finished the round with pars on the 17th and 18th.

His score of 5 over for 18 holes puts him in a tie for 100th place with the round still underway. The event's interim leader is Shane Lowry with a score of 4 under through 12.

Bryson DeChambeau wasn't the only star to get off to a rough start at The Open

Several players who were considered favorites to contend for and even win the Open Championship title had an unfortunate first round. Bryson DeChambeau was one of them, but he certainly wasn't the only one.

Cameron Smith had one birdie, six bogeys and a triple bogey (8 over) through 13. Wyndham Clark had the same score on the 15th with a birdie, two bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey.

Rory McIlroy finished at 7-over after a birdie, four bogeys and two double bogeys. Tommy Fleetwood finished two shots ahead of McIlroy (5 over) and tied with DeChambeau.

Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Åberg finished at 4-over, while Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay were 2-over when they played the 14th hole.

Players closely watched by fans and the media, such as Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, also failed to shoot low. Mickelson finished his round in 3 over, while Woods had a score of 6 over through 14.

With the first round still underway, only 17 players are under par and eight of them are still playing, so their score is not yet final. Another 16 players are at even par, with five of them still in play.
