Cameron Smith performed a shoey in his hometown, during the first round on Friday at the LIV golf event in Adelaide. The shoey means chugging down a cold beverage from the shoe, which is mostly alcohol, a traditional way to celebrate in Australia.
DJ Fisher, the Australian DJ sensation, invited Smith to do a shoey, just like last year. The hometown hero couldn't ignore the request. He went ahead chugging the drink from the Nike shoe.
Last year, DJ Fisher offered Smith a shoey at the par-3, 12th hole, also known as the Watering Hole. Have a look at the video of Cameron Smith doing a shoey at LIV Golf Adelaide shared by Fisher on Instagram.
Cameron Smith's all-Australian Ripper GC didn't win but finished in fifth place. Brendan Steele of HyFlyers GC was leading by hitting a low 8-under 64 after Round 2 of LIV Golf Adelaide.
Shoey moments at the LIV Golf Adelaide
In 2023, the winner at LIV Gold Adelaide, Talor Gooch, celebrated his first win by removing his shoe and chugging the champagne. Presently, he plays as the defending champion at The Grange.
Ian Poulter was just having time with his fans, clicking pictures and giving his autographs to the crowd standing on the other side of the rope.
The audience in the club's gallery started shouting, "Shoey, Shoey, Shoey." Chase Koepka joined in, and both drank from the Nike shoe, which delighted people.
Last year, the spectators were building up Bryson DeChambeau's every shot and later started cheering him for a shoey. The player took a shoe and gulped down the drink. He had the greatest range session of all time.
Many players have gulped down, while Dustin Johnson has the opposite thinking about the tradition.
He has been a four-time major winner yet never did a shoey. Also, during the victory of his team, 4 Aces GC, at the LIV Golf Adelaide Team Event, he didn't perform a shoey.
Johnson expressed his refusal to do a shoey and said,
“It’s not the drinking of beer from the shoe; it’s putting the shoe back on after drinking beer,”
Shoey disgusts Johnson, even if his team wins, so he will not be spotted in a shoey.
