Charley Hull is at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia, leading the European team that will play in the 2024 Solheim Cup starting Friday, September 13. The Englishwoman played a practice round on Thursday and had one of her peculiar interactions with fans.

Hull approached one of the spectators to ask for a light and lit a cigarette. The moment was captured on video and posted to X by Gabby Herzig of The Athletic. The video was reposted by several other users and has received tens of thousands of views.

In the video, Charley Hull is seen lighting her cigarette with the lighter of one of the fans in attendance. Hull is wearing the familiar blue and white of the European team.

Hull has been seen smoking on the course several times this season. Last June, she explained that it was a way to kick the habit of vaping.

This was part of what she said (via Golf Monthly):

"I hate smoking. I used to curse at my dad when I was younger for smoking, but I think it's to do a little bit when I'm stressed...I just kind of vaped, and I wanted to stop vaping, and even though smoking is not better than vaping, it's just you can vape indoors all the time."

How is Charley Hull coming into the Solheim Cup?

Charley Hull is in the midst of another solid season on the LPGA Tour and the Ladies European Tour (LET), although she has yet to win a tournament. She has played 17 events on both tours, with only one missed cut (she withdrew from two events) and six top 10s.

Her best results this year have been two runner-up finishes, both in the LET's Aramco Team Series (Tampa and Korea events). Other notable results were her third place finish at the Aramco Ladies International and her fifth place finish at the Women's Scottish Open.

Hull played in all five of the season's Majors, making four cuts. She missed her only cut of the year at the Amundi Evian Championship, but finished in the top 20 at the US Women's Open (T19), Women's PGA Championship (T16) and AIG Women's Open (T20).

At St. Andrews, she was among the leaders, but lost ground in the final two rounds and was unable to challenge for the title.

Hull also represented Great Britain at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. There she tied for 27th place.

These results placed her 12th in the world rankings. They also put her at the top of the points list to make the European team for the Solheim Cup.

Hull will be making her seventh appearance in the Solheim Cup. In six previous appearances, she has won three times, with a tie in 2023.
