Collin Morikawa revealed that he had worked a lot on his game during the offseason. The American kick-started his 2025 PGA Tour season with the season-opening event at The Sentry. The tournament started with its first round on Thursday, January 2, and Morikawa had a good start to the event.
Morikawa made some changes to his practice routine during the offseason, one of which included implementing Sam Snead-esque techniques in his pre-shot routine. Before taking the shot, the American opens his lead hip and drives his right knee, then hits the ball.
PGA Tour golf analyst Sean Martin shared about Collin Morikawa's new and interesting routine prior to taking the shot on X, writing:
"Collin Morikawa said he did a lot of off-season experimenting. One change was this Sam Snead-esque addition to his pre-shot routine. Before beginning his swing, Morikawa now opens his lead hip and drives his right knee to mimic his impact position."
Martin also shared a video of Collin Morikawa's new Sam Snead-esque pre-shot routine. Check out the video below:
The new pre-shot routine has seemingly helped Morikawa with his game at The Sentry. After two rounds of the event, he settled in second place.
Collin Morikawa opens up about his performance at The Sentry
Morikawa opened up about his amazing performance at The Sentry 2025 during the press conference after the second round on January 3. He shot an impressive round of 65 and jumped two spots on the leaderboard to take solo second place.
Speaking of his performance on January 2, Morikawa said, via ASAP Sports:
"I think when you guess the wind correctly, I think it's still, today we started with the wind that was into that we never really thought and then we finished with the same wind, kind of this west, northwest wind. Wind's all over the place. It was even more today.
"A lot more down, but just when you guess the wind right it just feels like you accomplished something because all the practice it was kind of blowing 20, 25, and today like I'm on the first hole and it's blowing in, but I hit it 40 feet past because you're just not used to the lightness of the wind. It's just being able to guess. I think the weekend is going to be pretty down, so just being able to guess correctly out there," he added.
On the second day of The Sentry, Collin Morikawa started the game by making pars in the first four holes. He then shot a birdie on the fifth and bogeyed the sixth, followed by two back-to-back birdies. He shot six birdies on the back nine and settled for a round of 8-under 65. Meanwhile, Hideki Matsuyama is in the lead at 16-under.
