WATCH: Shane Lowry hits the first tee shot in TGL history

Shane Lowry hit the first tee shot in TGL history on Tuesday, January 7, as the new league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy made its debut. The 37-year-old made the shot at SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The first TGL match was played between The Bay Golf Club (BAY) and New York Golf Club (NY). BAY consists of four PGA Tour players, Ludvig Åberg, Wyndham Clark, Min Woo Lee, and Shane Lowry whereas NY had Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and Cameron Young.

The TGL posted the first shot of the league on its official X (formerly Twitter) page. It captioned the post:

"First tee shot in TGL history."

In the initial frames of the clip, Lowry can be seen preparing for his shot at the SoFi centre. Ahead of him is a giant digital screen portraying a golf course. The first hole distance is shown as 377 yards. In the next frames, Lowry took his swing with full force and the ball's trajectory is shown mid-flight at a speed of 168 mph. The ball landed close to the green with bunkers around.

The camera then shifted to the audience where Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods can be seen cheering after the first shot. In the last frames, Lowry could be seen celebrating the shot with a smile and a fist bump.

The tech-infused golf league is scheduled to have 15 matches in the first season that will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2. The first match was won by Bay Golf Club by a score of 9-2.

How does the TGL's schedule and scoring work?

The 15 matches to be played in TGL will pit two teams in a 15-hole virtual competition. In each match, three PGA Tour players would compete while one would serve as a substitute.

The scoring system would be in two stages. In the first nine holes, triples format will be played followed by singles in the last six holes. To win the hole, a team has to hole in fewer shots.
