Jose Maria Olazabal is at Infinitum Golf in Tarragona, Spain, for the final stage of the DP World Tour Q-School. The two-time Major champion is not looking for his European Tour card, however, as he has swapped the player's clubs for the caddie's bib.
Joseba Torres, nephew of Jose Maria Olazabal, is playing in the Q-School and the Spanish golf legend is carrying his bag. As the player himself acknowledged, he is very lucky to have his uncle with him in this tournament.
"I'm very lucky to have my uncle José María Olazábal on the bag," Torres told the DP World Tour News Service. "I've practised with him a lot and to have him on the bag with his experience and his knowledge, I'm very lucky."
Torres also explained that for him, Jose Maria Olazabal is not only a very experienced player, but also one who knows his game very well. According to Torres, the two-time Masters champion has been following his career since he first picked up the clubs:
"He has been with me since I started playing golf when I was three years old. Obviously in a tournament it is different but he has always been with me and he knows what I'm more comfortable with and not. He really knows my game.
He added:
"Whatever he says I say yes, let's go and do it because I really trust him. I know he isn't going to say anything that I don't need to do so I really trust what he says."
Jose Maria Olazabal won 23 tournaments on the European Tour and six on the PGA Tour, including two Masters Tournaments (1994, 1999). He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2009 and received the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports in 2013.
Jose Maria Olazabal's nephew's performance at the Q-School and more
This Friday (Nov. 8), Joseba Torres played the first round of the Q-School with three birdies and one bogey (2-under 69). He is tied for 48th place after the first 18 holes.
The tournament consists of six rounds with a cut after 72 holes. The top 65 (plus ties) will play the final two rounds, while the top 20 (plus ties) at the end of the event will earn a DP World Tour card for the 2025 season.
Players who make the cut but finish outside the top 20 will receive a card to the Challenge Tour, the DP World Tour's feeder circuit. They will be able to play there next season and try to qualify for the main European circuit's 2026 season.
Joseba Torres won the Spanish Under-16 Championship before winning a scholarship to Nova Southeastern University to play collegiate golf in the United States (Division II). In 2023, he capped his amateur career by winning the Spanish Amateur Championship.
