Bryson DeChambeau's father, Jon DeChambeau, died at the age of 63 in 2022 after a long battle with diabetes and kidney failure. He was diagnosed with diabetes in the early 1990s, and in 2014, the family learned about his kidney failure.
In 2017, Jon's friend, Ron Bankofier, donated a kidney to him. Previously, Fresno State Golf Coach Mike Watney had offered to donate his kidney, but it was not a match. Nevertheless, Jon appreciated Watney's kind gesture and acknowledged it in an interview with a local television station in 2017, saying (via Golf Digest):
"You go from a handshake to a hug is what's really happened. When you see it a friend you shake their hand or kind of say hey to them. When you see somebody that gave you life you hug them and tell them you love them."
Bryson DeChambeau's father died in November 2022 and he shared an emotional post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:
"Love you Dad. Im sad to see you go but you've been through way too much pain in this life. I'm so happy you are at peace. Now you get to be with me and watch me at every event I play. Thank you for being an amazing Dad and I'll see you in the next life."
It is important to note that as Bryson DeChambeau took the lead at the ongoing US Open this week, which will have its finale on Sunday, June 16, at the Pinehurst No. 2 Golf Course, the LIV golfer admitted in his interview with Golf Channel that he will be dedicating his shots on every hole to his father.
Bryson DeChambeau has been playing fairly well in the major. Gearing up for the final round, he will start his game with a lead of three strokes.
Previously, Bryson DeChambeau dedicated his resounding 58 round to his father
Last year at the LIV Golf Greenbrier event, Bryson DeChambeau shot an unbelievable round of 58 to win his first individual title on the Saudi Circuit. Following his victory, he became emotional while talking to the media and dedicated his win to his father. DeChambeau said (via SI):
"Yeah he would. He was with me out there all day today. No doubt. It’s been almost a year, and it’s been a really difficult couple of years, but doing it this way and finishing out with a 58 or something like that. It’s all glory to God and glory to him upstairs."
DeChambeau was very close to his father, and at this week's Major, he will be playing for him. The 30-year-old golfer has won 12 tournaments in his career, including eight on the PGA Tour.
He started playing professionally in 2016, and that year, he debuted at the Masters. Notably, his father was undergoing hemodialysis at that time but still attended the Augusta event to cheer for his son.
Bryson's father was his biggest support, watching all his victories on the PGA Tour either on television or in person. Jon had also witnessed Bryson winning his maiden Major in 2020 at the US Open.
As the 2024 US Open final is scheduled for Father's Day, DeChambeau has his eyes set on winning it and dedicating it to his father.
