Xander Schauffele won the 2024 PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club to register his first Major championship victory. The game went onto the final hole, where Schauffele needed a birdie to avoid a playoff with Bryson DeChambeau, which he managed to make and register his name on the Wanamaker trophy.
The eight-time PGA Tour winner had never won a Major trophy previously, making this victory even more special. He consistently maintained his position at the top half of the leaderboard and finally got the monkey off his back.
In this process, Xander Schauffele registered numerous records to his name. However, the most significant one was the lowest score to par in a Major championship. Schauffele scored -21 for the event, the lowest score to par in the Major championship history.
The previous best score was by Dustin Johnson at the 2020 Masters tournament. Johnson scored -20 at Augusta Nationals, as the tournament was played during the fall season because of the pandemic.
A quick recap of Xander Schauffele's round at the 2024 PGA Championship
Xander Schauffele was in great form coming into the 2024 PGA Championship, as he finished runner-up the previous week at the Wells Fargo Championship. He had the opportunity to win it all but couldn't finish the game well on the final day as Rory McIlroy overtook him to lift the trophy.
However, the 30-year-old looked determined this week and maintained his position at the top since Day 1. He started his round by carding 62, which gave him a slight margin of error as even though he scored 68 in Rounds 2 and 3, it did not affect his position on the leaderboard.
He was co-leader in the final round along with 2020 PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa. The 2024 PGA Championship winner began his front nine on the final day with -4 and looked comfortable until Bryson DeChambeau gave him a score by shooting -7 for the day and carded -20 for the event.
Schauffele began his back nine with a bogey but bounced back quickly with birdies on the 11th and 12th holes. However, he couldn't add anything more to his score until the 17th hole, as he remained at -20 with Bryson.
So, going into the final hole, Xander Schauffele needed a birdie on a 573-yard par 5 to win the tournament and avoid a playoff. The tee shot was decent, but unfortunately, the ball landed just between the fairway and the bunker. So, he had a challenging second shot with the ball just above his feet.
To everyone's surprise, Schauffele made good contact and got his ball around 36 yards from the green. He needed an up-and-down birdie from that position to win and a par to force a playoff with DeChambeau.
Schauffele held his nerves and made an incredible birdie to register the first Major championship victory of his career.
