The 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship is the first of three playoffs to decide the winner of the FedExCup. If two or more players are tied after 72 holes at the tournament, the winner is decided in a sudden-death playoff format after the completion of the fourth round on the same day.

The playoff holes at the FedEx St. Jude Championship are 18-18-11-12-18. In the 2023 tournament, Lucas Glover and Patrick Cantlay were tied after the 72nd hole. They entered the sudden-death playoff starting from the 18th hole. However, on the very first hole itself, Cantlay scored a bogey and Glover won the tournament with a par.

Similarly, at the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, Will Zalatoris and Sepp Straka were tied after the 72nd hole. They both scored two consecutive pars on the 18th hole. On the third extra hole, i.e. the 11th hole, Zalatoris won despite scoring a bogey.

Another playoff was played at TPC Southwind at the 2021 World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Abraham Ancer won the tournament on the second extra hole, i.e. the 18th, by a birdie against Hideki Matsuyama and Sam Burns. Given the history at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, a playoff could be likely at the tournament again this year.
