In early September, it was announced that stars from LIV Golf and the PGA Tour would square off in a made-for-TV match in Las Vegas in December. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will represent the American-based circuit while Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau will represent the Greg Norman-led league.

A little more than a month later, the match has a date and a venue. Golf Digest reported on Wednesday, October 9, that the 18-hole event will be played on Tuesday, December 17, at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas.

Although the exact schedule for the event has not yet been determined, it was reported that the event will be televised live on TNT Sports. It was also clarified that this event will not be part of "The Match" series, which started in 2018 and at some point featured McIlroy as well as Koepka and DeChambeau.

Shadow Creek Golf Course is owned by MGM Resorts International. It was built in 1990, has a length of 7,560 yards and is par-72. Its rating is 74.5 and its slope is 145.

The course hosted the 2020 edition of the PGA Tour's CJ Cup and four editions of what is now the LPGA Tour's T-Mobile Match Play.

Confirming his participation in the event, Rory McIlroy said (via Golfweek):

"This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energize the fans. We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again."

McIlroy/Scheffler vs. Koepka/DeChambeau match: The context

The match, which will pit Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler against Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, is not exactly a showdown between tours as the organizers are the players themselves. According to Golf Digest, all four players have a stake in the event.

However, this showdown between two PGA Tour players and two LIV Golf players comes at a crucial time in the negotiations between Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the American-based circuit.

A recent Bloomberg report claimed that the two entities were close to reaching a final agreement at a meeting in New York a few weeks ago. According to the report, the only thing holding up the deal was some discrepancies regarding a possible path for LIV Golf players to return to the PGA Tour.

Another issue that reportedly held up the deal was some players allegedly wanting current LIV Golf players to return the money they received for leaving the PGA Tour. Despite these discrepancies, fans have seen some signs that the current landscape of men's professional golf could change in the near future.

These signs include the invitation of numerous LIV Golf players to play in the DP World Tour's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and the presence of PGA Tour and PIF leaders Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan at the same event, even playing together during the Pro-Am.
