Bethpage Golf Course is one of the best public courses in the United States and is located in a suburban area of Long Island, nearby New York City. It consists of five courses, one of which (Black Course) is included in the Top 40 golf courses in the country.
Bethpage State Park, where the Bethpage Golf Course is located, began to be established in 1912, while the golf facilities emerged in 1936, in the midst of the Great Depression. The Black Course, first to be opened, was designed by Joseph H. Burbeck & A.W. Tillinghast, and restored by Rees Jones in 2002.
It is a 7468-yard, 18-hole, par 71 golf course with poa annua grass greens and ryegrass and poa annua fairways. It has numerous water hazards and sand traps.
Its difficulty is so famous, that it is known by the sign placed on the first tee, which reads: "WARNING The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers."
In fact, Golf Adviser ranked the Black Course as the most difficult golf course in America. In the same category, Golf Digest ranked it sixth in the country.
An estimated 200,000 rounds of golf are played each year at Bethpage Golf Course. The record for the course is held by Brooks Koepka, at 8-under 63. That score was achieved in 2019 when he won that year's PGA Championship at the Black Course.
The course has hosted numerous high-level tournaments. From the PGA Tour it has played two editions of the U.S. Open (2002 and 2009), two editions of the St. Jude Championship, then called The Barclay's Tournament (2012 and 2016), and the aforementioned 2019 PGA Championship.
The Black Course is set to host the 2025 Ryder Cup, initially scheduled for 2024. The traditional tournament will pit teams from the United States and Europe against each other.
Bethpage Golf Course in 2023
Bethpage Golf Course has had a fairly active 2023 season in terms of tournaments, even if none of them have been top-tier.
On May 5-7, the inaugural edition of the AJGA Preview was played there, a tournament with which the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) hopes to help the best golfers in the category make a name for themselves. This tournament brought together 78 players from all over the country, between the ages of 12 and 19.
On the other hand, another AJGA tournament will be played at the end of June. It is the Polo Golf Junior Classic, an event that is reaching its 43rd edition. The best 32 golfers of the category in both sexes are summoned to compete for the title in four rounds.
