Who is Angel Hidalgo? Everything to know about the golfer who beat Jon Rahm to the Open de Espana win

Angel Hidalgo of Spain has emerged as a winner at the 2024 Open de Espana. The DP World Tour event concluded on Sunday, 29 September, at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid in Madrid, Spain.

Hidalgo carded 65, 67, 68 and 70 in the four rounds of the tournament. After 72 holes, he tied the score with Jon Rahm. He won the tournament in playoffs by a birdie on the second extra hole against Rahm. Talking about his win, the 26-year-old said, via European Tour:

"Two or three years ago, I was in the first tee, in the trees, supporting Jon - without playing, I just come here to Madrid to see the tournament. To be here and win the tournament is unreal. Oh, my gosh, it's amazing."

LIV Golfer Jon Rahm, who recently won the 2024 LIV Golf Championship, congratulated Hidalgo and said:

"May he enjoy it. Winning at home, winning a Spanish Open with all the support that there has been. You could tell how much he felt it and how important it was for him."

Hidalgo received 835 Race to Dubai points and jumped 70 spots from 88th to 18th after winning the Open de Espana. He also won a prize money of €494,861.54. He jumped more than 200 spots in the OWGR rankings from 398th to 162nd.

Angel Hidalgo Portillo was born on 28 April 1998, in Marbella, Spain. He started playing golf at the age of two. He won the Spanish Amateur competition twice in 2016 and 2018 and turned professional in 2018.

Following turning pro, the Spaniard has played on several Tours including the Alps Tour, Challenge Tour and European Tour. He has had four wins in his career so far, and three came in 2021. He won the Ein Bay Open and Giorgio Bordoni Memorial on the Alps Tour and the Big Green Egg German Challenge on the Challenge Tour.
