Asterisk Talley of the United States is the youngest player on the field at the 2024 US Women's Open. The tournament is being played at the Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania.
15-year-old Asterisk Talley is currently tied at fifth position with the likes of Minjee Lee and Sei Young Kim. Talley carded 70 with even par in the first round at the second LPGA Major of the season.
Talley scored a birdie on the sixth hole after five straight pars on the front nine. However, she faltered on the seventh hole with a triple bogey. She regained her momentum on the back nine with three birdies, on the 11th, 13th and 16th holes.
After the round, Talley said (via ABC30):
"I feel like I could have done a lot better today, but I'm not mad at all about my round."
On the top of leaderboard is Yuka Saso with 2-under 68 after the first round at Lancaster Country Club. Talley said that the leaderboard motivates her (via ABC30):
"I look at the leaderboard all the time. I feel like some people get scared to look at it, but I don't really do that. It's just I want to see where I'm at, and then if I need to start playing better golf and get my head in the game."
Talley made it to the US Women's Open after rounds of 68 and 69 in the qualifiers at Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, California. She is one of the 22 amateur players on the field. She is a native of Chowchilla, California and has been playing golf since childhood. She is currently in her freshman year at Chowchilla High School.
Talley has been a finalist at Drive, Chip and Putt National twice. She was also the runner-up in 2018 in the Girls 7-9 (years of age) division of the event, while she finished fifth in 2022 at the Augusta National in the Girls 12-13 division.
Currently, she is 83rd on the World Amateur Golf rankings. She will tee off today (Friday, 31 May) at 6:56 a.m. ET with Kristen Gillman and Isabella Fierro for the second of the US Women's Open.
