Cameron Smith, once one of the top-ranked golfers in the world, left the PGA Tour in 2022 to join LIV Golf. It was a move that, at the time, sent shockwaves through golf and signaled LIV's staying and drawing power. They had poached one of the PGA Tour's best and brightest.
Smith spoke about the move in an interview with the Herald Sun and said “it was the best decision of my life." He added (via Golf Monthly):
“Not only from where the tour is going and where it will end up but also from a life standpoint as well. The extra time I get to spend in Australia compared to what I used to means a lot. I feel like I am a much happier person now compared to where I was before.”
Fans, who have undoubtedly been shaped by the events of the last two years since Smith's defection, had their say on the golfer's comments. The bulk of them were split, with some acknowledging the benefits to Smith's move and others believing he might have made a mistake. One fan wrote:
"We’ve heard this before and it never ends well"
"I’d be happier too if I got a huge sum of money and didn’t have to win to get it. The winning is now just icing on the cake. Can’t blame him for liking financial security. Sadly, I wish it was not at the hands of the Saudi regime," one added.
"Another great one nobody will know," another chimed in.
"I hated the move when he did it(selfishly) he was my favorite player. But you have to thing everyone who was offered liv money and didn’t take it, is regretting not taking it. Generational money secured," one added.
"Has anyone ever seen a LIV interview that was not player positive? Every interview is so sugar coated it's almost diabetic now," another said.
"Hard to fault a guy for looking after himself and family for the rest of their lives and beyond.. Hotels are great for a vacation, as a place to live not so much," one noted.
"Good for him if that was important but he is not really missed on the PGA Tour really," another claimed.
Smith likely doesn't pay much attention to how anyone feels as he stated he is more than happy to play at home in Australia and on LIV Golf.
Cameron Smith was once frustrated over reports about LIV move
In 2022, just before he officially made his move to LIV Golf, Cameron Smith won the Open Championship. He had broken through with his first Major but everyone only cared about the reports, true as they ended up being, that he was leaving the PGA Tour.
He said of the media coverage (via Golf Monthly):
"Yeah, it was definitely, I guess, a frustrating media conference after the Open."
Smith added:
"I think, like you said, perhaps a little bit overshadowed that I'd probably just won the biggest tournament that I'll ever play in and someone was asking that."
He ultimately did come to understand that reporters were just doing their jobs and that his move to LIV was big news at the time.
