Joel Dahmen's caddie Geno Bonnalie isn't accompanying him at the 2024 Procore Championship. He is taking time off to celebrate his wife's birthday in Italy.
Meanwhile, Rob Rashell, Dahmen's longtime swing instructor is on the bag of the PGA Tour player. He was born on 30 December 1975 and grew up in the Pacific Northwest. As per his official website, he grew up playing several sports but settled with golf and basketball in high school.
Rashell's golf journey began when he started caddying at Everett Country Club. He played collegiate golf at the University of Washington (UW). He competed professionally for 14 years on several tours including the European and PGA Tour.
In the 2005 PGA Tour, Rashell played in 25 tournaments and made the cut in six of them. He also competed in two U.S. Opens (2005 at Pinehurst and 2008 at Torrey Pines). Since 2014, he ventured into professional coaching. He also guides junior and high school athletes.
Rashell is also the TPC Scottsdale's director of instruction. After the first round, talking about Rashell, Joel Dahmen said, via Golfweek:
"Rob (Rashell) says stay patient. When Geno tells me to stay patient, I tell him to be quiet. When Rob tells me to be patient, I listen."
Dahmen had a strong start at the 2024 Procore Championship. He carded 5-under 67 in the first round and is tied for fourth. For more than a decade, he has had Geno Bonnalie by his side as his caddie. Talking about him, he said:
"I'm assuming with Geno he got a great deal on whatever he booked so he couldn't pass it up. He told me a long time ago the dates weren’t going to work and I said no problem."
While talking about Rashell, Dahmen said:
"Rob's been my coach for nine-plus years, he played on Tour in the early 2000s, played the European Tour, he coaches at a high level, he knows my game as well as anyone. And just a different voice sometimes is OK."
Dahmen further said that when you're close friends with someone (Geno Bonnalie), it can be easier to disregard their advice. However, when it's your coach who's giving instructions, you can't ignore them.
On the front nine, Dahmen notched three birdies on the 3rd, 5th and 6th holes against a bogey on par-4 eighth. On the back nine, he scored an eagle on par-4 13th, two birdies on the 14th and 18th holes against a bogey on par-3 11th.
Joel Dahmen will tee off at 10:11 a.m. ET with Chan Kim and Chandler Phillips in the second round of the 2024 Procore Championship on Friday, 13 September.
