The 23-year-old Johnny Keefer was born in Baltimore, Maryland to John and Judy Keefer. His family lived in San Diego for seven years before moving to San Antonio, Texas. He started playing lacrosse at the age of four. He took up golf at 11 when his father John bribed him with lacrosse equipment.

He did his schooling at Lady Bird Johnson High School in San Antonio, Texas. He won three titles in his high school:

  • 2017 AJGA Sergio and Angela Garcia Foundation Junior Championship
  • 2017 TJGT Texas Junior Masters
  • 2016 AJGA Under Armour Jordan Spieth Qualifier

He went to college at Baylor University in Waco, Texas from 2019 to 2024. In the freshman year, he recorded three top-5 finishes and tied for second place at the Cabo Collegiate. In his both redshirt freshman and sophomore year, he was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.

In his redshirt junior year, he became the first Baylor golfer to enter the NCAA as an individual competitor since 2009. In his redshirt senior year, he tied for 11th at the NCAA Championship, Baylor’s highest-ever individual finish.

He also won the 2024 Big 12 Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2024 Scout McNealy Award Winner in his final year. He was best ranked as No. 24 in WAGR rankings in his amateur career.

Johnny Keefer finished 25th in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Rankings which exempted him from PGA Tour Americas. He was unstoppable at the North America Swing of PGA TOUR Americas. He won the 2024 CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open by one stroke over Neal Shipley and Joey Savoie.
