Thomas played the first round of the Genesis Scottish Open bogey-free with eight birdies. Thomas nearly matched the course record (9 under), but parred the last five holes and came up short.

Defending Genesis Scottish Open champion Rory McIlroy carded an eagle, five birdies, and two bogeys (5 under). He is currently tied for eighth.

A very unusual play took place during the opening round. Ludvig Åberg was looking for the green with an iron shot, but his ball hit another player's ball directly, sending it completely off the green.

In this case, Rule 9.6 had to be applied, which states that the ball moved by the outside action must be replaced in its original position. Åberg was not penalized, but his ball remained where it was after hitting the other ball, meaning, the green side rough.
