Scottie Scheffler started the first round of the TOUR Championship on 10 under, thanks to his status as the FedEx Cup leader. Scheffler recorded the best score of the round, a 6-under par. His performance included seven birdies, five of which came on the back nine. His only bogey of the round came on the 1st hole. The 28-year-old's putting was particularly effective during the first round of the TOUR Championship. He recorded a stroke gained: Putting of 1.434, which tied for 5th in the tournament. The American averaged 1.63 putts per green in regulation (9th), including a 33-foot putt for birdie on the 7th hole.
Five players shot 5-under in the first round of the TOUR Championship: Collin Morikawa, Adam Scott, Taylor Pendrith, Justin Thomas and Aaron Rai. Morikawa began the day in T6 and climbed to T2, while Scott started in T11 and finished in T4.
The opposite occurred to Ludvig Aberg, who shot an even par for the round with four birdies and four bogeys. Aberg's score remained at 5 under, causing him to drop from 5th place to T14. The same was true for Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who also shot an even par for the round and finished in a tie for 29th place. Billy Horschel recorded the only over par score of the round and fell from T20 to T30.
The TOUR Championship will conclude the 2024 PGA Tour season, although the circuit will resume its calendar in less than a month with the FedEx Cup Fall.
