Marcel Siem, who clinched the trophy at the 2023 Hero Indian Open, is a German golfer. He scripted a thrilling one-shot victory over his fellow competitor Yannik Paul.
Siem's panache proved more rewarding when the 42-year-old carded an under-68 to lift the trophy on February 26. With an aggregate score of 274, he claimed the winner's share of $340,000 at the 2023 Hero Indian Open.
However, what eventually caught the attention was his colorful shirt and ponytail. Playing at DLF Golf and Country Club, New Delhi, Siem and Paul had a neck-to-neck competition at the tournament.
Marcel Siem caught up with Paul after a fourth-hole birdie at 11-under and quickly moved to the par-5 to register a lead on the 10th hole, which he extended on the 11th hole.
Nonetheless, more drama awaits in the final six holes. Things started to slip out of Marcel's hands on the 13th hole when Paul made a birdie and he settled for a bogey, resulting in them sharing the lead.
Fortunately, Siem turned the tables in his favor on the 15th hole when he subsequently sank a 15-foot birdie to regain the lead to finish under 14.
On the final hole, he struggled around the water hazard. He made a shot and the ball dived into the water. Siem unleashed the ball on the third shot, leaving him with two putts for par.
Paul missed a birdie on the final hole, resulting in Marcel Siem winning the tournament by one shot.
"It’s a second kickstart for my career" - Marcel Siem on his victory
It was the fifth tour victory for Marcel Siem. He won the title after eight years and 116 days. Speaking about his win, Siem said:
"That (18th) was a key moment, when you know that you have to hole a putt to win the tournament. The whole body is shaking in these kinds of moments. I love Yannik, he’s a super guy and super player, but at this moment you cannot feel sorry for him. It’s a battle out there. The pressure was on, but I’m glad he missed that putt.”
He added:
“It’s a second kickstart for my career this triumph should be right up there. Two years ago, I was not sure if I would ever play on the European Tour, and here I am, a champion on the Tour again.”
Born on 15 July 1980, Siem has been playing golf since his school days. The German golfer turned professional in 2000 and joined the European tour two years later in 2002.
Siem quickly won his first European title at the 2004 Dunhill Championship. However, for his second win, he waited eight years before winning the 2012 Alstom Open de France.
Marcel Siem has won seven professional events in his career, including five European Tours, one Sunshine Tour, one Challenge Tour, and one other tournament.
He has reached No. 47 in the world rankings and competed in three of the four major tournaments. He finished at 12 in the US Open in 2014, while his worst finish was recorded at the 2012 PGA Championship.
