The Presidents Cup is the next significant tournament in golf. At the end of September, a team from the United States will take on an international team minus players from Europe. It's similar to the Ryder Cup but with different countries represented and on a different schedule. Much like that tournament, there are automatic qualifiers and captain's selections for the final roster. Those haven't yet been made.
Six players automatically qualify for each team based on the points they accumulated. The other six will be picked by captains. For Team USA, that's Jim Furyk and for the International Team, it's Mike Weir.
Each team has different criteria to determine who makes the roster. American players earn points based on a weighted FedEx Cup points system. These are tallied from January 1, 2023, to August 24, 2024. The top six on the points list after the BMW Championship are given a spot on the team.
The International Team uses the OWGR ranking instead. All OWGR points awarded through the BMW Championship go towards automatic qualifying. There's no set period for these points to be accumulated.
Currently, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, and Sahith Theegala have qualified for Team USA. They are the top six right now in that order. Of course, Furyk can pick whoever he wants, but the remaining top placers might make the list. Here's how they rank:
- 7: Sam Burns
- 8: Tony Finau
- 9: Russell Henley
- 10: Keegan Bradley
- 11: Brian Harman
- 12: Max Homa
Chris Kirk, Akshay Bhatia, and Eric Cole are not far behind, either. For the International side, here's who has qualified:
- Hideki Matsuyama
- Adam Scott
- Sungjae Im
- Tom Kim
- Jason Day
- Byeong Hun An
The rest of the top placements include Corey Conners, Cam Davis, Min Woo Lee, Taylor Pendrith, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Adam Hadwin, Si Woo Kim, Nick Taylor, and Thriston Lawrence.
Can LIV Golfers compete in the Presidents Cup?
There are some notable absences among the top golfers from both the United States and International teams. Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau are not on the roster, nor are Joaquin Niemann and Cameron Smith.
One of the first punishments for the LIV Golf defectors was that they were ineligible to compete in the tournament. That has not changed since. They're still prohibited from being on the team.
Furthermore, they would have a difficult time making it anyway. FedEx Cup points are awarded on PGA Tour events (which Presidents Cup players have to be eligible for anyway), and LIV members do not compete in those. Qualifying via the OWGR ranking is also difficult since LIV players can only play at most four eligible OWGR events all season.
