The LIV Golf Team Championship concluded this Sunday, September 22, at Marideo Golf Club in Dallas, Texas. The event marked the end of the circuit's season and was filled with surprises until the very end
Cameron Smith's Ripper GC won the LIV Golf Team Championship with a score of 11 under. Smith himself was the best player on the team with a score of 4 under, followed by Lucas Herbert (3 under), Matt Jones (2 under) and Marc Leishman (2 under).
Here's what Cameron Smith had to say about his team after the victory (via www.livgolf.com):
"It's so good ... not only great golfers but they're better people and I think that's what being a Ripper is all about. To have those guys out there today to lean on, there was something telling me that we were going to be alright."
Ripper GC had finished 9th in the previous season's team championship, which makes their win all the more special.
The LIV Golf Team Championship was played in a stroke-play format, with all players' scores contributing to the team's score. Dustin Johnson's 4Aces GC and Kevin Na's surprising IronHead GC tied for second place at 8 under par. Johnson and Patrick Reed led their team at 3 under par. For the IronHeads GC, Na himself and Jinichiro Kozuma were the low scorers at 3 under par.
IronHeads GC, ranked 13th in the season, reached the final after defeating Brooks Koepka's Smash GC, ranked 4th in the regular season, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, they defeated the leader and top favorite, Bryson DeChambeau's Crushers GC.
Jon Rahm's Legion XIII tied for fourth at 6-under. Rahm, however, was unable to play due to illness and was replaced by John Catlin. Tyrrell Hatton led the team with a score of 4 under, but it was not enough to improve the team's finish.
Only the four winning teams from the semifinals competed for the LIV Golf Team Championship title. The losing teams from the quarterfinals competed for places 9-13, while the losing teams from the semifinals competed for places 5-8.
